Microsoft Teams is a standard part of the Microsoft Office 365 suite and is set to become the standard collaboration tool as Skype for Business is phased out over the course of 2019. Out-of-the-box, Teams provides a hub for teamworking. It provides instant access to chat conversations, content, and tools from across Office 365 into a single workspace. I addition to chats, Microsoft Teams also supports video calls and meetings.
Microsoft Teams® – Phone System
Phone System is the Microsoft technology that provides PBX functionality in the Cloud. Telephony users interact with Phone System by using Microsoft Teams as their interface. This provides full PBX telephony functionality such as making and receiving calls, simple voicemail and transferring calls. All this functionality is available ‘internally’ across your company network ‘out-of-the-box’.
This solution can be used across multiple devices with Teams being available across Windows Mac, iOS and Android platforms and all within a single Office 365 licence as well as some basic IP phones or specialist Teams Devices.
You can connect your Microsoft Teams system to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in either of two ways; using a Microsoft calling Plan or via Direct Routing.
Connecting to PSTN with Microsoft Calling Plans
Microsoft’s preferred method of achieving this is by selling a ‘Calling Plan’. Put simply, Calling Plans are very similar to an old-style mobile phone contract where you pre-commit to domestic and international minutes but there are many issues created by this.
There are many significant disadvantages of using a Microsoft Calling Plan to access the PSTN when compared to Direct Routing for Teams from Qubic
One of the most significant disadvantages is having to surrender your telephone number to Microsoft. To use the service, you must port your phone number to Microsoft who then own your numbers and become your ‘Service Provider’.
You cannot take a company wide Calling Plan, you need to buy a separate Calling Plan for each user. Just like old style mobile contacts, any calls you don’t use, you lose. If any user goes over their included minutes in any moth, all calls are chargeable by the minute – UK domestic calls are 2.5p per minute. The monthly plans must be paid for by credit card each month making it both expensive and impractical for most business and enterprise customers – in summary, it represents bad value.
Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams from Qubic – Connecting to PSTN
Direct Routing is Microsoft’s answer to interoperability. Over time, it will be developing relationships with organisations to help connect to SIP, legacy phone systems and extended features using a Session Border Controller (SBC). There are very few partner organisations that can deliver Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams Microsoft, by is an organisation that has proven abilities.

Qubic has SBC technology located in the Qubic Cloud Nexus. Microsoft Teams calls can be directly routed to and from the PSTN over resilient SIP trunks. Qubic will then bill you just as if you were suing a standard phone system with straightforward per minute billing at highly-competitive rates.
Qubic can provide Direct Routing for clients that are using connectivity via the public internet or, if the customer uses Think Nexus® Connectivity (Qubic’s own circuits), calls are routed directly to the Qubic Cloud without crossing the public internet. In either case, calls are directly routed to PSTN over the same High Availability SIP and billed per minute.
Integration with Other Phone Systems
Qubic can use its SBC technology based in the Qubic Cloud Nexus to fully integrate Microsoft Teams with other telephony platforms, either existing or new that can provide extended features such as enhanced voicemail, call logging and recording or contact centre and links directly to the PSTN over resilient SIP trunks. Legacy systems can be seamlessly integrated. All numbering is retained, and billing is straightforward per minute billing based on usage.
Full Integration with Mitel
Qubic can tightly integrate Teams with a Mitel phone system. The Mitel system can either be in the Qubic Cloud or on-premise. The integration means that users can make and receive calls using Teams or a Mitel phone or both. For example, to call an extension from the Team app on a mobile, you can simply dial the extension number straight from the Team app.
Connecting to the Mitel system gives access to extended services including call logging, voice recording and multi-media contact centre.
